WHAT IS A PATTERN OF IMBALANCE AND HOW DOES IT APPLY TO MY CONDITION?

“PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY. THE POINT IS EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT. YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.” Andrew Weil

This quote by Andrew Weil says it all when it comes to healing. We are each an individual who needs INDIVIDUAL attention. ONE SIZE FITS ALL HEALING DOES NOT WORK.

Each occurrence of illness, imbalance, and discord is different. Some issues you move in and out of quickly and others have tenacity and become chronic. The KEY is the PATTERN you present at any given time. This pattern can change quickly at times or it may stay the same. So it is the pattern that dictates what treatment should be done. The treatment shifts in accordance with the PATTERN.

For Example: you have a something which includes headache, sore throat, chills, no heat, clamminess, and slight body aches. Many would say, “I have a cold”. Having a “cold” is a label that Western medicine has assigned, but in the scheme of things means nothing.

From my perspective, this “pattern of symptoms” is pretty clear and is very specific, but does NOT reflect what it is to “have a cold” in YOU. The person in the example is exhibiting an internal cold pattern (different than having “a cold”). The body aches and chills substantiate the cold yet they have some heat in their throat and they are depleted (no energy) in some way because of the clamminess. This is how we analyze our patterns in Chinese Medicine.

By pattern, I am referring to all the signs (objective indicators – things I notice and ask you about) and subjective symptoms you are expressing via emotions, thoughts, and in the physical body.

While this may appear simple, it is pretty complicated in many cases. These patterns apply to all dis-ease in the body. Many times more than one pattern is present concurrently.
